American Water’s Solaire Project Receives Environmental Award

American Water (NYSE:AWK), the largest investor-owned U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced today that it has earned a Project Merit as part of the 2008 Environmental Business Journal Achievement Awards. Under the Water/Wastewater category, American Water’s Applied Water Management (AWM) Group was acknowledged for installing an on-site wastewater recycling facility at the Solaire, a luxury residential development in New York City’s Battery Park City.

“I am so pleased the Solaire has been recognized as a model project by the environmental community,” said Tim Davies, president of Applied Water Management. “There was great commitment from all involved to create a healthy, sustainable living environment and manage the limited resources of an urban area.”

As one of the world’s first “green” high-rises, American Water designed, oversaw the construction and operates an advanced wastewater recycling system, supplying water for flushing toilets, filling the cooling tower, and irrigating the rooftop garden. In operation since 2003, the Solaire conserves up to nine million gallons of water each year and consumes 35% less overall energy than a traditional high rise.

Davies adds, “The success of the Solaire has helped pave the way for additional environmentally conscious urban residential developments, which may be the best reward of all.”

The Solaire has received a LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council and a Top Ten Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the Environment (COTE). It is one of six similarly designed buildings in Battery Park City, an area adjacent to the Wall Street financial district, and is a leading example of urban environmental management.

The Environmental Business Journal Achievement Awards annually recognizes companies and executives for environmental achievements seen as outperforming the market. American Water will be among the winners featured in Environmental Business Journal’s Executive Review issue in late January.
