Tech Expert Sinclair Somadina Obasi Shares Five Ways Artificial Intelligence Is Impacting Everyone’s Daily Lives

Technology expert Sinclair Somadina Obasi has shared five remarkable ways Artificial Intelligence (AI) is impacting people’s lives daily.

“Artificial intelligence may sound like something out of the movies, evoking images of super-intelligent robots that strongly resemble humans rising and overthrowing their inferior human overlords,” Obasi says. “The thing is, AI is much more subtle and affects people’s lives in ways they probably aren’t even aware of.”

Obasi is the Chief Technology Officer of Mplatforms CC Ltd, which is based in South Africa. He was formerly a web developer, web programmer, and Chief Technology Officer for several companies in Lagos, Nigeria.

Obasi says social media feeds are powered by AI, which determines what shows up by analyzing what a person has clicked on and interacted with in the past.

“Not only that, but all of your social media accounts are building complex pictures of you and your likes and dislikes, then passing that data on to advertisers who are trying to sell you their products,” he explains.

“Some of these social media sites know you better than you even know yourself, and in particular, they know exactly what will make you open your wallet,” Obasi says.

GPS Navigation is also among how AI affects people’s lives by making rapid calculations and turn-by-turn road directions, no matter what GPS app a person is using.

Nowadays, the phone already doubles as a GPS that can tell people the moment there’s an accident, extra traffic, or construction along their route and can almost instantaneously re-route them to get them to a place in the shortest time possible.

It also helps people navigate all over the world, and not just while driving; it helps people make sense of a foreign country’s public transit system in no time at all.

Obasi says AI is also leading the charge in protecting people with fraud detection and risk management in their online bank transactions.

“You know those weird texts or calls you sometimes get from your bank if you make an unusual purchase on your card? That’s security monitoring courtesy of powerful AI systems your bank uses to build a spending pattern for you,” Obasi explains.

Every time a person swipes his card, a machine somewhere is learning what’s typical for him on he spends his money. Every time some activity deviates from that norm, the bank is alerted to the possibility of credit card fraud.

Obasi says Artificial Intelligence is also transforming the streaming experience, with streaming apps these days already providing a tailored experience in a user’s recommended movies.

Streaming apps use powerful AI and algorithms to keep people watching and listening by ensuring that the next suggested show, movie, or song is something they would probably like, based on viewing or listening history.

With ride-hailing public companies Uber and Lyft revolutionizing urban transportation, Obasi says the ride-sharing industry is wholly dependent on lightning-fast AI systems.

“The entire app is enabled by knowing minute-by-minute locations of thousands of drivers and users, understanding peak hours and off hours, and planning complex driving routes to ensure that a ride is always only a few minutes away,” Obasi explains.
