New Jersey American Water Announces 2020 Environmental Grant Award Recipients

As water utility providers across the nation celebrate Drinking Water Week, New Jersey American Water is proud to announce the recipients of its 2020 Environmental Grant Program. This year, the company has awarded a total of $35,238 to four distinguished organizations and community groups within its service area that are engaged in sustainability projects to improve water source protection or watershed protection.

Montclair State University’s New Jersey Center for Water Science and Technology (NJCWST) was awarded $10,000 for the creation of a “Traveling Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) Lab” which will extend and advance NJCWST’s work in STEM education and promote community awareness of the importance and impact of surface and groundwater protection.

Garwood Green Team was awarded $8,688 for the installation of water fountains with enhanced bottle filling stations. These will encourage the use of refillable water bottles while reducing the need for single-use plastic water bottles which inevitably become litter or trash.

Sustainable Audubon was awarded $10,000 for the creation of two rain gardens that will demonstrate how surface water quality can be improved through volume reduction and the detention of direct discharge and overland flow runoff. These rain gardens will be used as part of their education outreach program to illustrate how additional improvements in urban environments can be accomplished.

Howell Township Organic Community Garden (HOCG) was awarded $6,550 for the implementation of a water conservation drip irrigation and fabric for the town’s local community garden which donates fresh produce to local community groups.

“Now in its twelfth year, our environmental grant program has provided more than $353,000 in needed support for 43 projects to help improve, restore and protect our valuable natural resources through partnerships,” stated Matthew Csik, Director of Water Quality and Environmental Compliance. “We are proud to recognize this year’s recipients and we applaud their efforts to make a lasting impact on their communities and New Jersey as a whole.”

The American Water Works Association’s (AWWA) Drinking Water Week is observed annually the first full week of May and focuses on educating consumers about how protecting water sources now will ensure everyone has a sustainable drinking water supply for the future.
