American Water Named One of the 100 Most Sustainable U.S. Companies

American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest publicly-traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced today it was named as one of the 100 Most Sustainable Companies by Barron’s Magazine.

“We are extremely proud to have once again been included on Barron’s list of 100 most sustainable companies,” said Susan Story, president and CEO of American Water. “We know that delivering clean, safe, affordable water and wastewater services is critical for our customers, our communities and our planet. We’re committed to the sustainability of this most precious resource and being an environmental leader. It is not just what we do, it is who we are.”

This is the third year in a row that the American Water was named to this list. This year, the company was the highest ranked utility of any type, coming in at #22.

American Water’s dedication to sustainability and being an environmental leader in the water industry includes having already reduced its greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 31% through 2017 and reducing 40% by 2025. The company has reduced annual water usage by 3.3 billion gallons through conservation, recycles over a billion gallons of water a year, and will invest more than $8 billion to improve aging infrastructure to reduce and eliminate water leaks over the next five years.

American Water also recently announced Cheryl Norton as its new Chief Environmental Officer to further its commitment to be a leader in environmental sustainability, caring for the planet, and leading the nation in outstanding water safety and quality.

Earlier this month, the company was recognized by the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), on the 20th annual list of America's Top Corporations for Women's Business Enterprises (WBEs), the only national award honoring corporations for world-class supplier diversity programs that reduce barriers and drive growth for women-owned businesses.

American Water was also recently named on Corporate Knights 16th annual Global 100 list of the World’s Most Sustainable Corporations. American Water was ranked number 16 and is the only U.S. based utility on the list.

In November, the company was recognized with the Muriel F. Seibert Award by the Women’s Forum of New York for its leadership efforts on gender parity and inclusion and diversity. American Water was one of 325 companies selected for the 2020 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI) which distinguishes companies committed to transparency in gender reporting and advancing women’s equality.
