Dr. Shilpa Gowda Selected as Top Physician of the Year in Occupational Medicine by IAOTP

With more than 20 years of professional experience, Dr. Shilpa Gowda has certainly proven herself as an accomplished expert in her field of occupational medicine. She is a dynamic, results-driven leader who has demonstrated success and professionalism throughout her entire career. Before Dr. Gowda joined the U.S. Department of Defense’s Fort Belvoir Community Hospital as a physician in 2022, her impressive repertoire of previous roles includes being a medical consultant and fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, director of occupational employee health for the Veterans Affairs Southeast Louisiana Healthcare System, and attending physician at the Maine General Medical Center.

Dr. Gowda’s Occupational and environmental medicine focuses on the impact on human health of physical, chemical, biological, social, and psychosocial factors in the home and workplace environments. The specialty encompasses health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis, and care for individuals; hazard assessment and risk management for populations; and research and policies aimed at preventing adverse occupational and environmental health outcomes for present and future generations. Evidence-based science, ethical medical practice, and an emphasis on social determinants of health are fundamental to the field.

Before embarking on her professional career path, Dr. Gowda attended Harvard University as a visiting undergraduate student from 2006 to 2007 and earned a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience from Brown University in 2008. In 2012, she received her medical degree from Brown Medical School. Dr. Gowda graduated from the University of Washington in 2016 with a Master of Public Health in Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. She possesses various professional certifications, including Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers. In addition to being a member of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Dr. Gowda is also a fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Gowda has received awards and has been recognized worldwide for her outstanding leadership in the field of occupational medicine. This year she will be considered for a feature article in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine and the Empowered Woman award given by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). In December, she will receive her current award as Top Physician of the Year in Occupational Therapy 2023 at the iconic Plaza Hotel In NYC.
