For decades, steel, lead and cast iron were used as the primary materials for water pipelines, but health concerns relating to lead poisoning and corrosion have been a significant issue and addressing it has proven to be immensely costly for countries around the world.
Water transmission pipes dating back to the 1970s were made out of concrete-lined steel pipes known as prestressed concrete cylinder pipelines (PCCP) which, over time, have become brittle and prone to rupture. Replacing these pipelines is also estimated to cost billions of dollars in the United States alone, and trillions worldwide.
In 2018, the EPA (U.S. environmental protection agency) estimated that over the next 20 years the United States would require $472.6 billion to maintain and improve the nation’s drinking water infrastructure. This includes the cost needed to replace or refurbish aging or deteriorating pipelines in the U.S., as well as to address corrosion issues through the use of corrosion control chemicals, coatings, and other protective systems.
Despite these efforts, pipeline breaks continue to happen all over the world on a regular basis. In the United States alone, an estimated 240,000 water main breaks occur every year and it is estimated that the United States loses a whopping six billion gallons of drinking water every day from leaking pipelines.
Globally, as well, trillions of gallons of water are lost each year from deteriorated pipes. Sewer and water leakages in underground pipelines have become a critical problem in most countries, developed and developing alike, worldwide.
A Sustainable And Cost Effective Solution May Be In Sight

GCPS’ pipes are also expected to be more durable, lasting for at least twice as long as pipes made out of steel or PCCP.
A Mobile Pipeline Manufacturing Process That Is Environmentally Friendly
GCPS has also developed and patented a mobile manufacturing process that allows large-diameter pipelines to be manufactured using a modular design at or near the project site – or in remote areas – where delivering prefabricated pipes is not feasible or prohibitively expensive.
This allows for its manufacturing units to move from project to project and offers significant cost advantages to pipeline infrastructure projects according to GCPS.
Mobile Manufacturing Plants cause a less adverse impact on the environment by reducing the carbon emissions involved in transporting pipes from a central plant to project locations. Other benefits include the prevention of leakage and safer drinking water that is corrosion and contamination free.
GCPS has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with a private agricultural development company for a $150 million international pipeline project and has plans to tap the multi-trillion dollar pipeline manufacturing opportunity that the market presents.
