CBD, CBDA & CBGA To Prevent COVID Replication: 2022 Research Report Released

Senior Affair, a knowledge hub and magazine for seniors, has released a report covering recent advancements in the use of cannabidiol (CBD) and its precursors to prevent the replication of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its spike protein.

In its latest report, Senior Affair showcases new research into the therapeutic properties of cannabinoids and the study of how Cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) interact with the SARS-CoV-2 virus spike protein. The study was conducted by Richard van Breemen of OSU’s Global Hemp Innovation Center in collaboration with Oregon Health & Science University scientists.

The research group suggested that while CBD does not prevent the virus from entering cells, a chemical screening technique identified that CBGA and CBDA bind to the Covid spike protein, impeding viral replication and, consequently, infectivity.

According to van Breemen, “These cannabinoid acids are abundant in hemp and many hemp extracts,” van Breemen said. “They are not controlled substances like THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and have a good safety profile in humans. And our research showed the hemp compounds were equally effective against variants of SARS-CoV-2, including variant B.1.1.7, first detected in the United Kingdom, and variant B.1.351, first detected in South Africa.”

Senior Affair reports a significant interest in CBD products during and after the pandemic. The new report is part of a larger consumer education initiative aimed at people over 55.

Senior Affair highlighted the far-reaching impact of this development and showcased the Covid-Away Tincture formulated by adaptive CBD supplier Freely. The tincture contains 500mg of CBDA, 500mg of CBGA, Vitamin D, and Zinc, which work together to impair continued infection and potentially aid recovery.

Freely states that Covid-Away is not sold as a treatment or cure for Covid but as a natural alternative that could prevent virus replication.

Each 1ml serving of the tincture contains 16mg of CBDA isolate and 16mg of CBGA isolate. Aside from Zinc and Vitamin D, the tincture contains Stevia, natural flavoring, and MCT oil. Senior Affair also showcased the Freely line of everyday tinctures, topicals, and gummies.

Explaining the mechanism behind Covid-Away, van Breemen says, “Cell entry inhibitors, like the acids from hemp, could be used to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and also to shorten infections by preventing virus particles from infecting human cells. They bind to the spike proteins so those proteins can’t bind to the ACE2 enzyme, which is abundant on the outer membrane of endothelial cells in the lungs and other organs.”
