Cornelius Alig, lifelong Indianapolis resident and longtime urban and commercial land developer, is calling on residents to take an active role in strengthening their neighborhoods. Drawing on his decades of experience in downtown revitalization, zoning, and historic preservation, Alig is advocating for community-driven efforts that ensure Indianapolis continues to thrive for future generations.
“Development isn’t just about buildings,” said Alig. “It’s about people, neighborhoods, and history. Every resident has a role to play in shaping the future of this city.”
Why It Matters
Indianapolis, like many mid-sized cities, faces challenges tied to growth, housing, and community resources. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 20% of Marion County residents live below the poverty line, and local reports note that one in four households in the city struggles with affordable housing. Historic neighborhoods often face pressure from new development, while aging infrastructure and limited social services strain communities.
“These numbers aren’t just statistics,” Alig emphasized. “They’re our neighbors. They’re families who want safe housing, strong schools, and vibrant neighborhoods.”
A Record of Service
Alig has played a leading role in shaping Indianapolis through his appointment as Vice Chairman for the Regional 2020 Plan under Mayor Bart Peterson and as Chairman of the Governor’s Residence Commission under two state administrations. Beyond professional service, he has held more than 15 nonprofit board positions and continues to work on social service projects that support local families.
“I’ve always believed you give back where you can,” said Alig. “Sometimes that means serving on a board, but sometimes it just means showing up and helping your community.”

Alig is encouraging residents to look for simple, practical ways to support their own communities. This includes volunteering with local nonprofits, attending neighborhood association meetings, supporting historic preservation efforts, and advocating for equitable development policies.
“You don’t have to be in city government to make a difference,” Alig said. “Every person can take action—whether it’s mentoring a student, planting a tree, or showing up to support a neighborhood project.”
