Busy Spring Move Season Anticipated, Planning Ahead Important
In preparation for the spring move season, JK Moving Services, the nation’s largest independently owned moving and storage company, has released a list of the most challenging items to move and tips on how to ensure that these valuable keepsakes and furniture make the move.
“With more than 40 years’ moving experience, we have seen consumers face tough choices to relocate cherished items—most often due to the size, complexity, and cost of moving them. With careful planning and coordination with the moving company, these items can make the move to a new home. We hope that fewer people are faced with tough decisions about relocating these items that can be hard to move,” explained David Cox, president, JK Moving.
Late spring is typically the busiest season for moving as the weather gets warmer and families relocate so they can get settled before the new school year. Sometimes items are orphaned due to logistical hurdles and cost concerns, but with the right planning and a professional mover this does not have to be the case.
Toughest Items to Move
1. Pool tables
Typically serving as focal points for game rooms, pool tables often weigh 650 to 1,000 pounds and can stretch up to 9 feet. The primary challenges with moving pool tables stem from their need for disassembly and specialized handling for their size and weight. Each component of a pool table requires precision and specialized care, including removing the felt, disassembling the frame, and protecting the slate pieces, which are both heavy and fragile.
2. Hot tubs
These luxury fixtures are typically about 7 feet square and can weigh upwards of 500 pounds without water. Setup also includes electrical and plumbing connections, adding another layer of difficulty to moving them, sometimes deterring homeowners from taking a hot tub with them when they move. Plus, transporting a hot tub without damaging its structure or systems requires expert handling.
3. Safes
Home safes come in various sizes and types, ranging from small personal safes weighing around 30 pounds to large commercial safes that can weigh over 1,000 pounds. The diversity in size and security features can significantly impact the ability to move them.
The sheer weight of heavier safes poses significant challenges during a move, including property and personal safety risks. Moving a safe without the right equipment can damage flooring, walls, stairwells, and even the safe.
4. Foosball tables
A family favorite, foosball tables typically measure about 2.5 feet in width and 5 feet in length. Because of the multiple rods and figures included in a foosball table’s structure, they are bulky and also fragile. A table’s awkwardness coupled with its delicate components require specialized handling to move without incurring damage, often making them a tricky item to transport.
5. Pinball machines
Weighing between 250 and 300 pounds, pinball machines are heavy and contain fragile electronics and glass components. Their unique nature makes them particularly vulnerable during moves, and many people leave them behind because of their size and weight.
6. Large executive desks
Lavish executive-style desks, particularly those assembled in home offices, can be complex to move. They are typically custom-built in place and intended as permanent fixtures, so disassembly becomes a daunting, complicated operation.
7. Full Length Mirrors
To properly protect glass and marble items that are longer than 60 inches in length, most movers utilize custom crating. Full length mirrors can present a dilemma – often the value of the mirror itself is less than the cost of the custom crate required to provide proper protection for the move. Many movers will provide the option of packing the mirror in a standard picture box while signing a waiver against breakage.
Tips on How to Avoid Leaving Something Behind
Leaving valuable items behind because of moving challenges can be inconvenient and costly and may mean parting with cherished belongings. When choosing a moving company to move large or delicate items, be sure to ask about their experience relocating them. Ask for references, specifically examples and details about how the company handled this type of move in the past, and ensure that they:
- Have comprehensive, professional services that include disassembly, secure transport, and professional reassembly services.
- Specialize in the logistics of moving large appliances like hot tubs who can manage everything from safely disconnecting the hot tub at your old home to transporting it and reconnecting it at the new residence, ensuring it’s ready for immediate use.
- Use the equipment and techniques designed for moving heavy items like safes.
- Take preventive measures such as custom packaging and crating to ensure complex furniture remains unscathed throughout the move.
- Use specialized packing and cushioning methods to safeguard electronics—such as pinball machines—during transport.
- Are skilled in disassembling and reassembling large furniture.
