As the vehicle becomes a centralized hub for entertainment, consumers look for more audio and video options
DTS, Inc., a subsidiary of Xperi Inc. (NYSE: XPER), today announced at CES® 2025 that it has achieved a major milestone for its DTS AutoStage platform: it is now integrated into more than 10 million vehicles across 146 countries, including more than six million vehicles in North America that utilize both DTS AutoStage and HD Radio™.
DTS AutoStage is a global entertainment platform for the connected car that seamlessly combines linear broadcast with IP-delivered content in a unified, user-centric experience. From audio to video, DTS AutoStage makes it easy for consumers to discover and engage with the full spectrum of their entertainment preferences, all in one vehicle screen for today and tomorrow’s car owners, drivers and passengers.
“Our goal for DTS AutoStage has always been to enrich the in-cabin entertainment experience by offering personalized discovery that extends well beyond a basic screen display,” said Jeff Jury, Xperi’s senior vice president and general manager of connected car. “By prioritizing easy discovery of the multitude of content and formats consumers demand, our platform equips automakers with the agility to transform customer entertainment experiences and build deeper, more engaging relationships.”
A recent consumer survey from DTS underscored that personal vehicle ownership is here to stay and that car owners, especially Gen Z and luxury vehicle owners, view it as an important third space, whether they choose to be alone, to relax or de-stress in their vehicle, listen to music or watch videos when the car is parked. Improved comfort and personalization, as well as having as many entertainment choices on their vehicle’s infotainment system as on their TV or mobile device, are among the features these respondents agreed would make their vehicle a better third space.
“The increasing adoption of DTS AutoStage is not surprising given the evolution of the vehicle as something beyond just a mode of transportation for owners,” continued Jury. “As the battle for the dashboard continues between big tech and automakers, our data gives potent evidence that today’s car buyers are looking for the kind of next-generation entertainment in their vehicles that DTS AutoStage delivers, while giving automakers the opportunity to own the customer experience, access engagement data, and deliver a personalized infotainment system.”
The traction of Xperi connected car technologies is further shown by the ongoing growth of HD Radio, the North American standard for digital radio, which recently marked milestone implementation in more than 110 million vehicles and is approaching roll out in 60% of new cars shipped annually throughout North America.
Building on the foundation of DTS AutoStage, the DTS AutoStage Video Service Powered by TiVo™ platform is the ultimate in-car video entertainment experience. The video platform brings a personalized, content-first experience to the connected car, delivering premium content across live TV, news, sports, movies and more on the vehicle screen. DTS AutoStage Video Service Powered by TiVo initially launched with BMW in 2023 and will be available in vehicles from a Japanese car company as soon as 2026.
The vehicle has evolved from a simple means of transportation to a no-couch-required entertainment zone in which consumers are looking for more than a simple screen and dial. In the same survey previously mentioned, audio consumption remained a consistent preference, with 88% of respondents indicating they listen to audio while driving. Additionally, video consumption has demonstrated notable growth, expanding from 31% in 2022 to 47% in 2024, reflecting an increasing trend of both passengers and drivers engaging with visual media while in the car.
DTS AutoStage Video Service Powered by TiVo focuses on delivering a personalized, intuitive viewing experience, bridging the transition from the home to the in-vehicle experience, allowing users to effortlessly continue their entertainment journey. By offering highly relevant content recommendations, as well as advertising, Xperi and DTS are changing the standards of a typical entertainment experience.
Throughout CES 2025, Xperi and DTS will be showcasing how their connected car technologies are revolutionizing the entertainment industry on the show floor in the LVCC West Hall #5840. If interested, request a demo at media@xperi.com.
