Cash Prizes and Expense Paid Trip to Attend NSTA’s National Conference to be Awarded for Exemplary Science Teaching

Shell USA, Inc. and the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) are calling for submissions for the Shell Science Teaching Award and the Shell Urban Science Educators Development Award.

The Shell Science Teaching Award recognizes one outstanding classroom teacher (grades K–12) who has had a positive impact on his or her students, school, and the community through exemplary science teaching. The award is open to all K–12 teachers, who have a minimum of eight years of experience (not including the current school year) as a teacher of science and must teach in a public or private school located in the United States, U.S. territories, Department of Defense schools, or in Canada.

The Shell Urban Science Educators Development Award is created for K–12 classroom science teachers in urban settings, designed to help strengthen quality science teaching and enhance teacher content knowledge. Classroom science teachers at the elementary, middle, or high school level who are part of underrepresented ethnic groups are also eligible to apply for the award. Qualifying underrepresented ethnic groups include African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans/Alaska Natives who maintain tribal affiliation or community attachment, Hawaiian Natives, and natives of the U.S. Pacific Islands.

“Teachers are so imperative in inspiring the next generation of technical and inventive talent,” said Dr. Frazier Wilson, Director, Workforce Development Diversity Outreach, Shell USA, Inc. “It takes passion and determination to create a space where students are encouraged to open their minds to possibly help solve some of the world’s most complex problems. We honor distinguished science leaders with this award because we believe teachers are key to building interest in science disciplines and future careers.”

The Shell Science Teaching Award winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize from Shell. Additionally, the winner and two finalists will each receive an all-expense-paid trip to attend NSTA’s National Conference on Science Education in Denver, Colorado, March 20-23, 2024. Winners of the Shell Urban Science Educators Development Award will receive $1,800 in expenses to attend the National Conference in Denver. All Shell award winners will be honored at a special evening celebration during the conference.
