Dr. Jennifer Robinson Advocates for Easier Access to Mental Health Care

Detroit-based Psychiatrist Calls for Greater Awareness of Online Psychiatry and the Barriers Many Still Face

DETROIT, MI / ACCESS Newswire / July 24, 2025 / As mental health challenges continue to rise across the United States, Dr. Jennifer Robinson, founder of Integral Psychiatric and Recovery Services, is urging individuals and communities to take mental health seriously-and to understand that help may be more accessible than they think.

"I started my online practice to meet people where they are," said Dr. Robinson. "A lot of people want help. They just can't always get to it."

Through her work as a psychiatrist, Dr. Robinson treats major depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance use disorders. But her mission goes beyond diagnosis and medication. She wants to raise awareness around the barriers many face when trying to access mental health services-and how online care can help.

Mental Health Care Still Has a Long Way to Go

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, but more than 50% never receive treatment. In underserved communities-especially among people of color and those in rural or lower-income areas-the numbers are even worse.

"People miss appointments because they can't take time off work. Some can't get childcare. Others don't have a clinic nearby," Robinson explained. "It's not a lack of will. It's a lack of access."

That's what pushed her to create Integral Psychiatric and Recovery Services-an online-only practice focused on making psychiatric care easier to access.

The Problem Isn't Always Awareness-It's Accessibility

While public awareness of mental health has grown, Dr. Robinson says the system still doesn't meet people where they are.

"It's not enough to say ‘get help.' People need to know how to get it-especially in a way that fits their life."

Robinson says online psychiatric services can be a powerful tool, especially for:

  • Parents who can't leave their children at home

  • Working professionals with tight schedules

  • Individuals with mobility or transportation issues

  • Patients in rural areas with few providers nearby

She believes this model should be standard, not seen as a backup.

"For some of my patients, being able to talk from their home changed everything. They felt safer. They were more open. And they stuck with treatment."

What You Can Do-Starting Now

Dr. Robinson is calling on individuals to take small steps that support better mental health-whether for themselves or someone else.

Here's what she recommends:

1. Normalise the Conversation

"Ask your friends how they're really doing. Be open about stress and burnout," she said. "That alone makes a big difference."

2. Explore Online Options

You don't have to wait months for an appointment or sit in a waiting room. Online psychiatry is now covered by many insurance plans and available in most states.

3. Be Honest About Struggles

"Mental health isn't weakness," Robinson said. "It's part of being human. Talking about it doesn't make you broken-it makes you brave."

4. Share Resources

If you've had a good experience with therapy or psychiatry, let others know. You might be the reason someone else gets help.

Serving Detroit and Beyond

A graduate of Cass Technical High School, Bowling Green State University, and Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Robinson is proud to serve her hometown and beyond.

She's also active in community service through Pure Word Missionary Baptist Church, donating her time and resources to food and clothing drives.

"Mental health and community care go hand in hand. People need food, support, and someone who listens," she said.
