With Addiction Statistics Rising Why Men Only Drug Rehab Programs Can Be The Right Answer

Addiction statistics are on the rise, and the opioid crisis has claimed a staggering number of loved ones around the globe. Choosing a recovery program for addiction is an immensely personal decision. It’s the first step on a journey that will lead to a whole new life. Whether making a choice personally or assisting a family member or loved one in choosing a treatment facility, some things should be considered when making that decision. There is a lot to think about, from inpatient and outpatient options to available mental health treatment. One of the things that can be overlooked is why men only programs drug rehab programs can be the perfect answer.

Men and women handle addiction differently, and though there are many crossovers, there are also significant differences. By working only with one gender, the staff can cater to the issues that impact all patients, not just part of them. Furthermore, it allows for a more intensive and tailored experience for all the men in the program. For example, entire sessions can be held about issues specific only to men, like male sexuality or the importance of male role models without excluding anyone.

One of the things that most rehab programs will explain is the complications that relationships can bring during the recovery process. Most professionals will recommend keeping dating out of the equation for at least the first year of sobriety. That’s because getting clean and staying clean should always be the highest priority during the beginning of the journey.

Human nature, however, is challenging to combat, and often in co-ed facilities, regardless of the rules, relationships tend to happen. Entering a male-only program takes this off the table for a good portion of men. In addition, it gives most men the opportunity to build camaraderie with their fellow addicts without the risk of romantic feelings developing.

“Men face a different set of expectations in society than women do. Often a man will feel the need to put on a brave face when surrounded by women because society has told him to. By removing women from the equation, men can be more vulnerable and learn that those expectations are part of the problem, not part of the solution.” Said a spokesperson.

One of the most important aspects of a recovery program is feeling safe and exploring the trauma and mental health problems that almost always accompany addiction. For some, an environment with both men and women can be that safe space. For others, however, they find themselves unable to open up and start the healing process. These men are more likely to be successful in a treatment facility for only men.

Overcoming addiction is one of the hardest things most people will ever have to face in their lives. Therefore, making sure that the process has the highest chance of success is critical.
