Naperville City Council In Chicago Approves Public Works Building Demolition To Pave Way For Temporary Commuter Parking

There is an old public works building located near Fifth Avenue train in Naperville that needs repair. This building will be demolished and a temporary daily commuter parking will be set up in the space created.

The demolition was approved unanimously by the Naperville City Council members and McDonagh Demolition Inc. awarded $259,200 to bring down the building which has been standing for the last 38 years.

Since the space created will be used for commuter parking, the Naperville, Chicago demolition cost will be paid out of the parking fund. This was stated by Rachel Mayer, the Director of finance. There has been abuse of commuter parking in the area and the city staff is identifying of this program and panning on auditing it for more fee spots.

“I believe no matter where we go with the parking; the building is inevitably going to come down now or later," said Councilman Kevin Coyne. It was also acknowledged that the demolition cost would be included in any future plans in case the property was put on sale.

The public works director placed the cost of the demolition and paving at $362,000. On the other hand, keeping the building and handling the repair and maintenance would cost $700,000. After demolition and creation of the parking space which will charge $2 everyday for one car, the space would bring in $131,500 every year. This means that the demolition would be paid by the parking in two years and the paving would be covered by the third year.

Residents are concerned about the term “temporary”. They claim that having the parking for a year or less would not be a good economic idea. On the other hand if the temporary means 5 years, then spending the amount to demolish and pave the space would be economically viable.

With the award, McDonagh Demolition Inc, will have to remove the walls, foundation, fencing, existing equipment, piping, and be in charge of the traffic control, back fill and utility disconnection
