ICAN California Abilities Network Strives to Eliminate Barriers for Disabled People With Its Hiring Services

Brighton, England -

Torrance, CA: ICAN California Abilities Network has advanced its supported employment program to help people with disabilities find a job, achieve financial independence, and gain access to community resources. Their innovative program involves job press classes, job development, paid internships and active employment support.

About 15% of the world's population lives with a disability. Usually underserved, individuals with disabilities are often unable to access the resources necessary to reach their fullest potential. To reduce this gap, ICAN advances its mission of eradicating barriers and providing accessible services that empower people of all abilities. By working with local businesses, organizations, and other nonprofits, ICAN offers job training programs, resources for disability rights advocacy, social events that promote inclusion, and activities to increase awareness of disabilities.

Started as Acampar Organization in 1975 by Pat Hammond (a school teacher for the physically disabled), they provided recreational experiences to help children with physical disabilities uplift their emotional, social, and physical well-being. Today, under Scott Elliot's leadership, ICAN California Abilities Network has grown to a non-profit organization that brings individuals with disabilities together and provides them with the necessary resources to gain financial independence and reach their fullest potential.

Programs developed by ICAN ensure all individuals have access to the same job opportunities in both public and private businesses. From providing job skills training, career development assistance, and recreational activities to advocating for the rights of individuals with disabilities, ICAN’s support has ignited self-confidence and an enhanced sense of “community belonging” to its people. Furthermore, ICAN provides resources for employers on how to accommodate applicants with disabilities better and provide a safe workplace environment for them.

With ICAN's goal to establish a world where the differences among individuals are celebrated and embraced, the organization provides a valuable service to those often underserved, paving the way for a brighter future.
