Grit, Growth, and the Raw Edge of Adolescence: "Almost Fourteen" Captures the Turbulence of Coming of Age

Award-winning author Richard Read delivers a gripping and heartfelt exploration of adolescence in his latest novel, Almost Fourteen, the fourth installment in his acclaimed series following Cali and Sky, two teens growing up in a fictional suburb of Columbus, Ohio. The book, recipient of the Literary Titan Book Award, continues the duo’s journey as they navigate the complex terrain of seventh grade, balancing friendship, young love, and the unsettling dangers that lurk beneath ordinary suburban life.

A compelling sequel to Finally Thirteen, Almost Fourteen finds Cali and Sky in the second half of their seventh-grade year, confronting both familiar and extraordinary challenges. From the anxieties of making friends and facing academic hurdles to the darker realities of kidnapping and trafficking, the story blends everyday adolescence with shocking circumstances that test courage and compassion. Supporting figures, parents, teachers, and police, play pivotal roles in guiding the young protagonists through situations that are at once frightening and transformative.

In a review by Literary Titan, the novel was praised as “a gritty and surprisingly tender story about young teens caught between the messy edges of childhood and the raw beginnings of adulthood.” The reviewer commended Read’s unflinching portrayal of adolescent vulnerability and strength, calling the book “a worthwhile read for parents, teachers, or teens who want something raw and honest.”

Through authentic dialogue, fast-paced storytelling, and moments of humor and sweetness, Almost Fourteen captures the unpredictable rhythm of early teenage life, where innocence meets reality, and where every choice feels like the most important one yet. This series has resonated deeply with readers of all ages, offering a rare blend of adventure, empathy, and insight into the adolescent experience.

Almost Fourteen is ideal for readers aged 12 and up, as well as for parents and educators seeking literature that sparks meaningful conversations about growing up, safety, and resilience.

Don’t miss this powerful and unforgettable story of courage, friendship, and growing up in a world that doesn’t always feel safe. Experience Almost Fourteen, available now on Kindle and in paperback on Amazon.
