A popular educational resource creator is offering a reader’s theater script for educators looking to add some St. Patrick's Day fun to their classroom instruction. Teachers love using reader’s theater as a tool to practice fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary, while students enjoy the chance to transform into the story’s characters.

"Reader’s theater is probably my favorite ELA teaching tool. It is such a great way to incorporate fluency practice and reading aloud," Mrs. Beers explains. "St. Patrick’s Day gives teachers a great backdrop to experiment with new lesson ideas since engagement often increases when you add seasonal themes to your instruction."
The storyline of her script follows a 6th-grade class faced with a mystery when recess equipment goes missing during the St. Patrick's Day classroom challenges. The students are quick to accuse one student, but it turns out the real culprit was someone they all overlooked. Luckily, a happy resolution is found, and the students discovered how much they can learn by making mistakes.
In addition to reading the script together as a class, there are several options to include word work and reading comprehension activities into this activity. The 20-page St. Patrick’s Day unit includes a 12-character script, reader response questions, context clue work, journal prompts, and a couple bonus ideas for classroom games.
Mrs. Beers recommends teachers have their students read scripts independently before reading aloud. This gives them a better feel for the story and their character’s role. It is also beneficial for them to be able to see and engage with one another while reading the script together.
