Michaeline Becker, From Corporate Worker to Freelance Hairstylist and Makeup Artist

Michaeline Becker began her career in the makeup industry about ten years ago; however, this was not her first career. She spent time learning and growing in a different field for a while before realizing that her love for hair and makeup could be turned into her career. We sat down with Michaeline Becker to discuss her change in employment and the hard work she put into establishing herself in the beauty industry.

“I have been building my career as a pro makeup artist and hairstylist for ten years. It's my second career, and I've put my whole heart into it as it's my passion,” says Michaeline Becker.

She started her career as a Biomedical Engineer, having just graduated from her Master’s program in the same field. But, Michaeline Becker says, “Even though I have my masters in biomedical engineering, I always felt like I was just being pulled in a different direction.”

Michaeline Becker spent a few years at a corporate job in the Biomedical Engineering sector before beginning to nurture her passion for makeup and hairstyling. She started by using it as a creative outlet to offset the stress of her corporate job.

“I started doing makeup and hair for my friends, and eventually decided to go to cosmetology school, through a lot of hard work and dedication,” says Michaeline Becker. While working towards her cosmetology degree, she still spent time working at her corporate job and trying to balance her passion and career.

Once Michaeline Becker received her degree in cosmetology, she added to her schedule by offering hair and makeup services through freelancing whenever she had spare time from her corporate job. “It's a huge jump and risk to leave the security of a full-time position at an established company where you have 401k and health benefits, and all sorts of things like that,” she says, remembering her corporate job.

After five years of balancing two jobs, she felt strong enough to leave her corporate job and focus on her passion full-time. She worked hard to ensure her new freelancing business could be successful. “I think my biggest accomplishment, when I look back over the last ten years of my career, was making the transition to full-time freelancer,” says Michaeline Becker.

Through freelancing full-time, Michaeline Becker could successfully grow her business and expand her portfolio through various exciting projects that she undertook.  She says, “Over the years, I ended up being able to work on jobs for clients, such as HBO, Cosmopolitan, and Target. I have also worked with celebrities like Sofia Reyes, Colton Underwood, and Baby Ariel.”

Michaeline Becker continues to rise in her industry, with some of her work reaching billboards on Times Square and on TV. “It’s been rewarding to see my business grow and to offer my clients an excellent experience,” says Michaeline Becker.

With that, she hopes to continue serving her clients and growing her business, including educating people on social media about the beauty industry. Michaeline Becker says, “I want to share my beauty knowledge with a broader audience and grow as a beauty educator.”
