Honolulu plastic surgeon Shim Ching now an 11-time Castle Connolly Top Doctor

Shim Ching, MD, MSc, has been named a 2025 Castle Connolly Top Doctor, the 11th year he has been honored with the prestigious Top Doctor designation.

HONOLULU, HI, August 12, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Shim Ching, MD, MSc, has been named a 2025 Castle Connolly Top Doctor, the 11th year he has been honored with the prestigious Top Doctor designation. Only about 7 percent of the nation's licensed physicians are selected annually as Castle Connolly Top Doctors for their specialties in their regions.

Dr. Ching is the owner of Asia Pacific Plastic Surgery, the practice he founded in 2005. He performs both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery of the face, breast, and body — most minimally invasively.

Procedures range from facelifts, "mommy makeovers," and breast reconstruction after cancer to eyelid surgery, laser liposuction, post-weight-loss body contouring, and breast enhancement.

Dr. Ching also performs an array of plastic surgery procedures for specific patient populations — including men, Asian people, and transgender people — as well as hair and brow restoration.

Dr. Ching is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and he is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Asia Pacific Plastic Surgery has been located since July 2024 in a new, state-of-the-art 11,000-square-foot facility and ambulatory surgery center in Honolulu. Home to two operating rooms and one minor surgery room, the facility offers patient rooms that overlook the ocean, a private elevator, valet parking, and covered parking stalls.

The practice's clinical providers also include plastic surgeon Zachary Long, MD; anesthesiologists; specialized medical assistants, nursing staff, and physician assistants; injectors; and estheticians, many of whom are board certified.

Dr. Ching understands the importance of integrating science and technology with an artistic eye when performing plastic surgery.

"I've always appreciated the beauty of the human form, and there's a lot of artistry involved in creating something beautiful," he says, adding that the longtime stigma associated with plastic surgery has started to disappear.

"Today, plastic surgery and services like injections are just part of life. People want to look their best, and when they look their best, they feel their best. Every day, we help change people's lives for the better by improving physical features they've been concerned about."

Treating patients from all over the world has given Dr. Ching a unique perspective as a plastic surgeon.

"While there are differences in beauty ideals across cultures, in the end, the most important aspect of my job is offering the best surgical care possible to allow patients to achieve their goals," Dr. Ching says. "Every patient is an individual and I always take the time to listen carefully to what a patient wants. I feel that is key to ultimately make a patient happy, which is always my utmost consideration as a plastic surgeon."

In addition to his practice responsibilities, Dr. Ching serves as an associate professor of surgery at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine.

He serves as a plastic surgery consultant to three medical institutions in the Middle East, as well: Quttainah Medical Center — in Doha, Qatar, and Kuwait City, Kuwait — and Quttainah Surgical Hospital in Dubai, UAE.

Top Doctors are nominated by peer physicians and selected by the physician-led Castle Connolly research team.

"Being selected for the 11th year to this group is a true honor," Dr. Ching says. "To be recognized by my peers as a Top Doctor is so rewarding, and I would like to thank everyone at Castle Connolly and my peers for this award. Most importantly, I thank my patients for their trust in me; without all the patients I have been able to help over the last 20 years, I would not be where I am today."

Dr. Ching has received many other professional and consumer recognitions, as well, including being named a Best Doctor in America (Plastic Surgery) and featured in HONOLULU and Modern Luxury - Hawaii.

Dr. Ching earned his medical degree at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. He completed five years of residency training in plastic surgery at McMaster University Medical Centre, serving as chief resident the final year.

He completed fellowships at San Francisco's Buncke Clinic — where he was trained in hand surgery and microsurgical reconstruction of the breast and upper and lower extremities — and the Plastic Surgery Center of the Pacific in Honolulu, where he was trained in aesthetic and oculoplastic surgery.

Dr. Ching also holds master's (MSc) and bachelor's (BSc) degrees in neurobiology and biology, respectively, from McGill University.

He is affiliated with The Queen's Medical Center and Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children.

Dr. Ching speaks English, Mandarin, and conversational French and Japanese.
