From Family Lessons to Lifelong Advocacy: A Student's Journey Toward Understanding and Change
ORLANDO, FL, December 12, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Bogin, Munns & Munns is proud to announce Amelia Hernandez as the recipient of the 2025 Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Scholarship. A junior at Texas Tech University, Amelia is majoring in Social Work with a minor in Apparel Design and Manufacturing. Inspired by her experience growing up with siblings diagnosed with FASD, Amelia has devoted her academic and personal life to building awareness, understanding, and advocacy for individuals and families affected by the disorder.
Understanding What Others Overlook
For Amelia Hernandez, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder isn't an abstract topic—it's part of her family's everyday life. Growing up as the oldest sibling in a family that adopted three children with the disorder, she witnessed both the daily challenges and the profound moments of resilience that come with it.
Through her experiences, Hernandez learned that compassion and understanding are often the most powerful tools for helping others. Her essay describes how behaviors associated with FASD are frequently misinterpreted by educators, caregivers, and social workers, sometimes leading to unnecessary interventions or misplaced blame. She emphasizes that awareness—and the willingness to look beyond assumptions—can make a life-changing difference for families like hers.
"Situations like this are often misread because too few people truly understand the disorder or its complex presentation," Hernandez explained. "That's why I'm going to become a social worker who does understand the various displays of FASD."
Her goal is to bridge that gap in understanding—using her education, empathy, and lived experience to advocate for better training, resources, and compassion within the social work field.
Academic Excellence and Service Beyond the Classroom
At Texas Tech University, Amelia channels her empathy into action. As a student representative for the Department of Social Work and Anthropology, she helps ensure that student voices are heard and valued. Through her leadership with the Volunteer Service Team at the Wesley Foundation, she organizes outreach programs that bring students together in service of the Lubbock community.
For Amelia, helping others isn't simply an extracurricular activity — it's a calling. After earning her bachelor's degree, she plans to continue her education and pursue a master's in social work, with the hope of working in hospitals serving rural and underserved populations. "I hope to provide resources and a sense of hope to patients and their families," she shared.
Bogin, Munns & Munns Honors Amelia's Commitment
The annual Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Scholarship is an extension of Bogin, Munns & Munns' belief that fairness and compassion should reach far beyond the legal system. Since 1979, the firm has championed respect, dignity, and awareness for those who face challenges through no fault of their own. By supporting students like Amelia Hernandez, the firm continues its mission to inspire understanding, advocacy, and hope for families affected by FASD.
Bogin, Munns & Munns proudly congratulates Ms. Amelia Hernandez, the 2025 Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Scholarship recipient. Her passion for advocacy and empathy for others embody the spirit of this award. We are confident she will make a lasting difference in her community, and we are honored to play a small part in supporting her journey toward that goal.
