Dear Colleague Letter on commitments to employees and trade unions
Dear Colleague
I wanted to write to you about an announcement that we are making today containing a series of commitments to employees of both Barclays and ABN AMRO worldwide. The announcement follows many meetings over the last weeks with employee representative groups, works councils and unions, and in particular it is designed to regulate how we will handle job reductions in the enlarged organisation after we have merged.
As you know from the announcements weve already made, over a three year period commencing 2008, we expect the combined workforce to reduce by about 10 per cent. To put this into context, the annual natural turnover of employees in Barclays runs at about 10 per cent. So I dont think that the job losses that occur as a result of our merger will be much larger than the natural turnover in, for example, 2006. Thats why we are able to commit to avoiding compulsory redundancies wherever possible. I attach the announcement that weve made in the link below. I hope that this will give clarity and reassurance about what action we will take in this context as a result of the proposed merger. We have made explicit commitments to honouring employee rights, and we will continue to work with employee and union groups globally as our merger proposals progress.
In addition, I wanted in this letter to talk about the growth opportunity that I see for the combined organisation. Our strongly held view - which is why we want to merge with ABN AMRO - is that the combined organisation will create one of the strongest competitive forces in the world. The story that we will be creating is a story of revenue growth stimulated by great products and great customer service. Its very clear to me that over time the number of people that we employ will rise, and I want the new Barclays to be seen by you and all those that we employ as a magnet for talent, and as a source of the best careers anywhere in the global financial services industry.
